ABOUT US

The Avery County Historical Museum is located in Newland, North Carolina.

Avery County was formed in 1911.  Our museum is housed in the original county jail.  Located on site are exhibits highlighting local railroads, military history, medical and educational development, cultural themes relating to mountain music and dance, and other topics of local interest.  Our most recent addition on tourism includes original costumes from the Land of Oz theme park.

Our museum staff is a group of dedicated volunteers who are relentless in honoring our heritage.  In preserving and restoring original artifacts, we strive to create exhibits that portray the unique history of our mountain culture.  Research on this history as well as genealogies of local families are also found here.

We have much to share. You are invited to come visit and become a part of our Avery County family.
